The Research Center for Ultra-High Voltage Electron Microscopy was established in 1974. The main purpose of this center is to utilize for scientific research a 3-MV class ultrahigh voltage electron microscope, which was originally installed in 1972 and renewed in 1995 through financial aid from the Ministry of Education.

Many advantages of high voltage electron microscopy have been made clear. The most important advantage of the 3 MV ultrahigh voltage electron microscope is the remarkable increases (about 15 times as large as that of 0.1 MV electron microscopes) of the maximum observable thickness of specimens. This microscope thus overcomes the limitations of conventional 0.1-MV class electron microscopes; the properties of bulk materials under various conditions can be studied directly and dynamically in nm scale. In order to utilize the advantage effectively, various sorts of devices for in situ specimen treatment have been developed.

The Research Center is open not only to all researchers at Osaka University but also to those from other universities. Projects of the Center are:

1.       in situ experiments of lattice defects in crystals

2.       in situ experiments with wet biological materials

3.       new applications of ultrahigh voltage electron microscopy to natural science

Research for materials science

1.       Diffusion in nm-sized atom clusters

2.       Electron-irradiation-induced foreign atom implantation

3.       Structural defect analysis in LSI devices

Research for instrumentation of ultrahigh voltage electron microscope

1.       Instrumentation of ultrahigh voltage electron microscope

2.       Development of remote operation system

3.       Image processing of TEM images
